Local Sustainability Assessment Questionnaire

Duke Energy is committed to helping build sustainable communities throughout our service areas. That's why we have worked with Global Community Initiatives to develop this tool to help community leaders and citizens assess where their communities lie along a continuum of sustainability. We provide multiple choice questions about governance and public input processes, social and economic conditions, and a community's natural and built environment.

At the end of the questionnaire, we provide scores on the four major categories of sustainability. These scores are relative to a hypothetical "Utopian" community that would score 100. This is very unlikely, and scores over 80 would be unusual. We provide them only to help you decide where to focus your efforts. And most importantly, we provide web-based reference materials that can help you move forward to achieve your goals. These resources have been used by communities in the U.S. and even other countries, so they are proven to work.

As a community leader, you must continually balance fiscal responsibility with a strong economy, good governance, a healthy environment, and effective social and municipal services. We hope this tool will help you reach that balance.
